Rally offers both the dogs and handlers an experience that is both fun and energizing. The canine team moves at their own pace very similar to rally-style auto racing. Rally was designed with the traditional pet owner in mind, but can still be very challenging for those who enjoy higher levels of competition. A Rally course includes 10-20 stations depending on the level (novice through excellent). Scoring is not as rigorous as traditional obedience. Communication between handler and dog is encouraged and perfect heel position is not required, but their should be a sense of teamwork. The main objective of Rally is to produce dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public places, in the presence of other dogs, in a manner that will reflect positively on the sport of rally at all times and under all conditions. One of the newest activities/dog show classes offered by the AKC. It allows owners and dogs to make the transition from Rally into the obedience ring smoothly. Any dog is capable of obtaining a Beginner Novice title with a good bond and a little hard work. The exercises in competition consist of heeling on leash, coming when called, sit for exam by the judge, and a sit stay.
Do I have to compete? Although many students go on to compete, it is not a requirement. Most people attend rally and advanced classes to sharpen their existing skills as well as learn the up to 40 new exercises. Rally practice helps to strengthen the training bond between dog and owner and it’s just plain fun! It is a fun way to teach your dog advanced obedience skills! Although Competition is not a requirement for taking these classes, those interested in competing should download the AKC rules and regulations, as well as the Beginner’s Guide to Companion Events.
Am I eligible to compete in an AKC show? Dogs must be AKC registered and 6 months of age. Mixed breeds are also allowed to compete as of 2010, so essentially all dogs can compete. See AKC regulations for details. Any dog registered or not can take the Rally obedience class.
Classes held most Sundays. Next start date September 18, 2011. $100/6 week class, each class 1 1/2 hours approximately, returning rally dogs pay only $85 Currently held at the Bayview Community center in East Hill (2001 Lloyd st. Pensacola, FL)
